Our stories so far
Penny - Adult fiction and Non-fiction Bookseller

As I celebrate exactly 30 years of book selling this year, I find myself finally achieving my dream with my sister Sarah of opening our own bookshop. A plan bandied around for many years and finally decided upon over lunch at Easter this year and here we are!It all started in 1994 when I took a part-time job at Dillons whilst at university.

The book selling bug got me and over the last 30 years I have worked at Waterstones, Play.com, Heffers, Blackwells and also enjoyed a few great years working for Harper Collins Publishers.

Bookselling is now firmly in my blood! I've always been a great fiction reader and now have found myself drawn to reading more non-fiction. I also have a thing about cooking books having far too many of them, (Sarah says she knows this because she helped me move about 20 boxes of them when I moved house a few years ago!)

I am passionate about art, nature, wildlife and the stunning fenlands where our parents brought us to live in the 70’s and where I find myself very drawn back to now. I just adore those big skies!I just love a beautiful book whatever the genre which has led to burgeoning bookshelves at home.

I adore a cheeky children's books, especially some of the amazing, illustrated picture books. I think I just love books.I am looking forward to sharing my joy of reading and my love of all books with you and learning from you too about what you enjoy reading. We really look forward to your visit.

The Next Chapters

We have grand plans for the future as we want to develop inclusive activities and events that really draw our community together and celebrate our love of reading.

A Book Tribe

We have been delighted with the response from the community so far and how many people, young and old say they're going to come and visit us and spend lots of time with us!

About Sarah – Children’s Bookseller

I can't remember a time when I couldn't read. The earliest memories of are of my mother reading to me regularly but also of going to my grandmother's and taking books off her shelf that had been read by my mother when she was little. Enid Blyton in those days had a lot to answer for and I quickly lost myself in the tales of the Famous Five and the Secret 7!

As a Mother

With my own children one of their most cherished times of each day was snuggling up and reading a bedtime story. We often read at any time of eth day and carried books with us whenever we travelled.  Reading a book together brings you closer and those shared experiences are never to be missed.

As A Teacher Turned Bookseller

I am an educationist by profession and have worked in many schools over the years with young children and I just delight in seeing the joy and wonder on their face when we share brilliant books together.

Reading can introduce a child to a world of adventures, broaden their horizons and get their brains ticking. The delight and the proud feeling they get when they realize they can read is a fantastic gift to give any child.

As a teacher I've taught children how to read and watch them as they've blossomed and gained confidence with their own reading. There is nothing nicer as a teacher than to see a child be able to pick up a book and read it and be so delighted with themselves when they do so. Finding the right book to support a reluctant or a beginner reader as they find confidence in their ability is what Words and Wonder Bookshop can help you with.

Come And Visit Us

I can't wait to meet you and your families as you come into our shop. I'm really looking forward to chatting to you and getting to know you and why you love reading as much as we do.

We would like to extend a warm welcome to you as part of the book tribe at Words and Wonder. Books See you soon!
